Martisor wines are made from selected grapes grown in the fertile highlands of southern Moldova.



An ancient Moldovan legend tells of the first day of March when the enchantingly beautiful Spring came to the edge of the forest. She looked around and noticed a small patch of ground where the snow had started to melt. There, under a blackthorn bush, a little snowdrop blossom was just starting to bloom. Determined to help the snowdrop, Spring cleared the area, releasing it from prickly branches. However, Winter saw what was happening and became extremely angry. She waved her hands and demanded the cold wind and snow to destroy the snowdrop. The frail blossom cowered under the bitter cold and severe wind. But Spring concealed the blossom with her hands to protect it. However, in doing so, she was pricked by a black thorn causing a single drop of hot blood to fall from her palm onto the snowdrop. Miraculously, the snowdrop revived, and Spring conquered Winter. 

Martisor is holiday in Moldova celebrating the arrival of Spring. On the first day of March people give each other small red and white trinkets, which are called “Martisor,” and they declare, ‘Live and flourish like an apple tree in the heart of spring’. The red colour of the trinkets symbolises the hot blood of Spring.The white symbolizes the cold snow of Winter. On the last day of March, people remove the trinkets from their clothes and hang them on blossoming fruit trees. Some believe that if one makes a wish while putting Martisor on a tree, the wish must come true. Some also believe that Martisor brings happiness and good luck for the whole year. In early April in Moldova, one can see countless trees with Martisor trinkets on them.

This collection of original red and white Moldovan wines is named after the Spring Festival of Moldova - Martisor. Martisor wines are made from selected grapes grown in the fertile highlands of southern Moldova.The climate here gives birth to grapes with a very rich taste. Hundreds of years of traditions and secrets of wine production have been preserved until today in Moldova alongside this old legend. The old legend of Moldova has become a true festival of Martisor, while ancient traditions and secrets of winery have come together in the making of Martisor wines.


Moldova is a landlocked country. The largest part of the territory lies between the two rivers, the Dniester and the Prut. Due to the proximity to the Black Sea, the climate is mild and sunny. The summers are warm and long, and the winters are relatively mild and dry. Moldova's rich soil and temperate continental climate have made the country one of the most productive agricultural regions since ancient times, and a major supplier of agricultural products in southeastern Europe. The country has a well-established wine industry. It has a vineyard area of 147,000 hectares (360,000 acres), of which 70% are used for commercial production. Most of the country's wine production is made for export.

Archeological relics show that 5000 years ago on the territory of present Moldova people were making grape wine. When the Greeks arrived at this territory, they also introduced their wine traditions. Later, when the Romans conquered these lands 2000 years ago, they discovered a flourishing winemaking culture with rich traditions, and they continued to develop it.

In the medieval period cultivation of grapes and wine making also continued. Viticulture reached its highest level in the 15th century, during the reign of Stefan the Great. New grape varieties were brought in, indigenous varieties were bred, wine cellars were built and the winemaking process was technologically upgraded.

In the middle of the 19th century Moldovan wine became prestigious at the court of the Russian Tsar and also in Europe. At the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris, the wine ‘Negru de Purcari’ received a gold medal. In the second half of the 19th century famous grape varieties from France were introduced to Moldova.

At present the wine industry of Moldova is privately owned. It has aligned itself with international standards whilst preserving its centennial traditions. Four protected geographical regions for wine production were established nowadays.


The goods are exported directly from the winery in Moldova.

Delivery is done by road for the European markets (DDU) and via the Black Sea to the rest of the world (CIF).

Since 2016 Martisor wines are sold across China.
